AI Girlfriend Conversation Starters: 20 Ideas That Work

September 27, 2026 · 6 min read

The hardest part of an AI companion chat is often the first sentence. “Hi” is fine, but it gives a character almost nothing to work with. A better opening supplies a scene, a choice, or a detail about you. These AI girlfriend conversation starters are prompts you can adapt to your own style, not scripts you have to memorize.

If you want to test one immediately, browse the characters and choose a personality that fits the mood. The browser guest chat has a limited free trial; check the current offer before continuing past it.

Easy first messages

Give the character a choice or a detail to respond to. You can send any of these as written, then follow up on her answer.

  1. We have five minutes before a train leaves. Where are we going, and why?
  2. What is one small thing that made your day better? I'll tell you mine.
  3. Pick our first conversation topic: an embarrassing story, a strange dream, or a tiny adventure.
  4. I'm new here. What should I know about you that isn't obvious from your profile?
  5. Set the scene for our first meeting in a place you would actually choose.

Playful questions

Play works best when there is room for surprise, not just a yes-or-no answer.

  1. Invent a ridiculous two-person business for us. What would we sell?
  2. You can challenge me to one harmless dare. What do you pick?
  3. We are stuck in a lift for ten minutes. How do you keep us entertained?
  4. Describe our imaginary weekend using only three clues; I'll guess the destination.
  5. What's your most controversial food opinion? Defend it.

Stories with a little depth

If you want a longer chat, offer your own answer after asking. The exchange feels less like an interview.

  1. What would you do with a completely free afternoon? Here's what I'd do...
  2. Tell me about a place you would return to, real or imagined.
  3. What's a skill you'd love to learn, even if you were terrible at it at first?
  4. We're writing a story together. What should the first line be?
  5. If we could keep one memory from today, which moment would you choose?

Keep a good chat going

When a reply gives you an unexpected detail, build on that detail instead of starting over.

  1. You mentioned that old bookstore. What happened the last time you went there?
  2. I like your answer, but take the opposite side for one minute.
  3. Let's make that scene harder: it starts raining. What changes?
  4. Pause the story. What does your character want right now?
  5. Before we switch topics, what question would you ask me?

Why these starters get better answers

A concrete scene beats a generic greeting

“We're at a train station” gives the model a place, a constraint, and a reason to react. If the first answer still feels generic, add one sensory detail or tell the character what you want to happen next. You do not need a paragraph-long prompt.

A good follow-up matters more than a perfect opener

Pick out something specific from the reply and ask about it. That turns one clever line into a conversation. For longer fictional scenes, see our AI roleplay prompt examples. If you want to understand what can be recalled later, read our practical memory guide; no AI companion guarantees perfect recall.

Try one with a character

Choose a character whose profile interests you, send one starter, and then answer her follow-up in your own words. That is a better test of chemistry than reading a feature list. Find a character to chat with.
